Pasture Rotation Basics for Small Ranches: Improve Gains and Cut Feed Costs
Rotational grazing isn't complicated — but most small operations never start because they think it requires a lot of land or infrastructure. Here's a simple system that works on 100–500 acres.
Why rotation matters financially
A continuous grazing system — one pasture, cattle always on it — typically supports 0.5–0.75 animal unit months (AUM) per acre. A well-managed rotational system on the same land can push that to 1.0–1.5 AUM per acre. That's effectively doubling the amount of beef you can run on the same property.
The other side of the equation is supplemental feed. Cattle on well-managed rotational pasture spend more time grazing high-quality forage, which means less hay and less grain to hit target weights. On a 100-cow operation, that can easily be $15,000–$30,000 per year in reduced feed cost.
The simple math behind a rotation plan
You need two numbers to design a rotation: how long cattle graze a paddock, and how long the paddock rests before cattle return.
Basic rotation formula
Number of paddocks = (Rest period ÷ Grazing period) + 1
Example: 42-day rest ÷ 7-day graze + 1 = 7 paddocks
For most warm-season grasses, a 30–45 day rest period allows adequate recovery. Cool-season grasses in spring might need only 21 days; the same paddock in August heat might need 60. Adjust based on what you see, not just the calendar.
Starting without a lot of infrastructure
The common objection is fencing cost. But you don't need permanent cross-fencing to start rotating. Electric polywire and step-in posts cost $200–$400 and can set up a temporary paddock in 30 minutes. Many operations run their entire rotation program on temporary fencing and a single permanent perimeter fence.
Water is usually the real constraint. If you can't get water to each paddock, you're limited in how small you can go. One solution is a larger paddock size with a sacrifice area near the water, rotating the grazing pressure within that area using wire.
What to record as you go
A rotation plan only improves over time if you track what you did and what the pasture looks like when cattle come back. The records that matter:
- Move-in and move-out dates per paddock
- Estimated forage height at entry and exit (a boot-top rule works fine)
- Head count and class of cattle grazing
- Any supplemental feeding done in the paddock
- Rainfall during the rest period
After two or three full rotations, patterns emerge. You'll see which paddocks recover fastest, which ones are consistently grazed too short, and where you have opportunities to improve water distribution or shade.
When to just call it done
Rotational grazing doesn't require perfection. A system with 4 paddocks and a 28-day rotation beats continuous grazing every time, even if the paddock sizes aren't equal and the rest days drift by a week. Start simple, observe what happens, and adjust. The theory is less important than actually moving cattle.
